Hello,

yes, if you uninstall old installation it remove all database tables, but you don't have to uninstall old version. You can install full package over free version. Only you need to know it do custom templates by coping default, don't modify default template, because after update this templates overrides and you lost all your customizations.

The only files that may be lost are custom templates. And only first time when you install full pack over free pack. that is it. All other things will be safe.

But making backup before update is good practice anyway :)

I've just remembered that you need make backup templates configs, which are situated in folder 'components/com_cobalt/configs'

if you uninstall old installation it remove all database tables,

Maybe a good idea to display a message or hint about the DB table removal. I remember, i was surprised in my early Cobalt days ;-) Is it possible to place an alert or confirmation before executing the de-installation process?

Important info. This is not very clear for new users and upgraders. The current warning under product description is slightly misleading. It sounds like "our installation is unpredictable... sometimes it deletes your files... sometimes not..."

hint about the DB table removal.

Once installed DB tables are never removed unless uninslall Cobalt explicitly.

So If I uninstalled Cobalt 8 from my site, my database and all my content was deleted? How is this possible? can it be restored without a backup?

I do not see how it can be possible. If you look through all Coablt code you will not find a query that deletes things. I mean it is phisicaly impossible. If somethign was deleted it is for:

  1. Some other extension deleted it. Something that have to enhance installation process.
  2. You uninstalled extension yourself before install new version.

lmarazzo can it be restored without a backup?

Unfortunately I'm personaly do not know a way to restore data without backup. Ask your hoster, perhaps they have a backup of they server.
