Hi there,

As an old customer of Joomlaequipment and MightyExtensions, I now plan to slowly get MintJoomla.

Before I decide to pay for any field or subscription I need to decide which is the best choice, considering the fast versioning style of Joomla (3.0 is on its way) and the unknown changes that might come with Joomla 3.5 next year.

Therefore, one question would be:

How long is the "lifetime" subscription plan, in reality?

My point is, objectively thinking, you cannot guarantee any longer period than 18 months, as long as you depend on Joomla versions.

If Joomla 3.5 brings differences like Joomla 2.5 (compared to 1.5), then technically MintJoomla extensions become obsolete, as MightyExtensions slowly "die" with Joomla 1.5.

Please understand, I do not mind paying for "good stuff" and I never regretted paying for Mighty, but because unfortunately you cannot offer (yet) a totally independent solution (complete CMS), I don't see the point of "lifetime" subscription.

Joking a bit, the Mighty Suite now, unfortunately is like getting heated seats, air conditioning, voice activated gps and dolby surround system on a convertible... pedalling tricycle. :)

Theoretically people may continue pedalling on Joomla 1.5, but only theoretically, because they will always be behind those "driving" a 2.5, while also the entire Joomla community "shouts" to upgrade to 2.5 for all the right reasons.

Finishing with the serious jokes, :) depending on how limited the "lifetime" licence is, I'm humbly suggesting the alternative of considering a 2 years or more years licence, with the "risk" of covering Joomla 3.5 (and later).

Just asking, if not, I'll probably have to stick to 1 year or less.

No matter what, I think you are doing great job with Cobalt & Emerald, seeing most of old Mighty requests done better and better.

George

Hello George

First please accept my personal greetings. That is very nice to see you here. You are one of our very valuable and important customers and we are very glad that you have chosen to continue with us. We are desperately needed in new active users like you for Cobalt, to create feedback and generate ideas.

How long is the "lifetime" subscription plan, in reality?

There are 6 months, 12 months and lifetime plans. Of course you can use purchased extensions lifetime in any case. But this is restriction for getting access to updates. If you purchase individually then you get lifetime access to updates.

How long is the "lifetime" subscription plan, in reality?

If Joomla 3.5 brings differences like Joomla 2.5 (compared to 1.5), then technically MintJoomla extensions become obsolete, as MightyExtensions slowly "die" with Joomla 1.5.

Now it is good explained. It is not like unexpected surprise with Joomla 1.6. And we know that for those who have native Joomla 2.5 extensions (and we do) it will be easy. So we know upfront that we will not have much trouble of migrating to J3 and J3.5. And our plan is that Cobalt 9 will be absolutely native to J3 and Cobalt 10 will be native to J3.5.

All this updates will be available within MintJoomla. And Cobalt core will be always free. And for additional stuff it means that if update is released within your active subscription you get it free. If you have lifetime subscription or individual purchases you get it free.

That also means that there is a big sense for Lifetime subscription. If you get 1 year, you will have to buy it again by the time J3.5 is released. And it is long support version for years ahead. It mean if you will need continue to get new packs, integrations, and other Subscription value stuff you will have to update once more.

In fact we think that MintJoomla live will be not less than 5 years. And if Joomla 4 will not require total refactoring, we will continue here without switching to new site or name.

Thanks Sergey for all explanations.

Maybe some of them can go on MintJoomla website as well.

I am a bit worried about Joomla 4.5 (joking) but five years sounds good enough, your extensions are meant especially for big projects, not something to play overnight.

But objectively, at this very moment, "lifetime" subscription is not convincing for two reasons:

  1. Even if Cobalt is much better than Resources, you will probably need much time until you offer features comparable with entire old suite, including Commerce. Some payable fields are in beta or earlier stages and need later versions of Cobalt.

  2. Financially, if you add all payable fields available now, they cost less (one-by-one) than a full Cobalt lifetime subscription. Maybe discounts for old clients help, but I want Emerald as well.

I will think well, study more about Cobalt free and decide in September what to buy.
