Yes, that should be the default behavior, if you DISALLOW category selection. (default is no one)

If you have set a "category limit", the article goes into the FIRST category of that limit.

You can see a simple example in forum pack -> type ticket.

What do you mean by "stopped working"? Where is your article saved?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm using the default Category Select template. That's what I used in C7 and also now that I've upgraded to C8 (8.430). That's why I think I'm just missing something in one of my parameters.

I have "Who Can Select Category" set to Registered. If I change that to "No one", the category selector disappears and when I submit the article, it seems to get saved without a category.

What I want to do is have the category selector visible when creating or editing a record but I'd like the default for the category selector to be set to the current category.

What would happen is that sometimes users forget to set the category and records end up in the wrong place. The other thing is that I have a lot of categories so having to choose it every time is a pain. Generally the current category is the one the user wants but they may want a different one from time to time.

I have applied some changes. Although I am not sure what was causing it I believe it should be fixed next release..
