Record template per category

Is there any special reason why we can't select record template per category? Now we can select record list template only! It's a nightmare to handle this width IF statements in record template.

that is because there might be articles of different type in one category, thus you will have to set template per category, per type which doubles number of parameters.

What is your task? How different templates have to be? I might suggest better approach.
