Open Question: General advice and Best Practices for a Cobalt Newcomer

Hi

INTRO:

I am an intermediate with Joomla (two years at it now), but I am still a bit of a novice with jQuery and PHP.

I am looking to start a site using COBALT, which I will be downloading soon to have a play around.

The next site will be for a music studio, I aim to expand its horizons beyond rehearsals and occasional recordings.

I aim to provide:

  • forum,

  • membership,

  • band pages,

  • downloadable files,

  • a store,

  • a directory, and

  • subscriptions.

QUESTION:

Are there any links, tips, suggestions or recommendations you can offer to get me on the right track:

  • Particular extensions to use.

  • Particular extensions to avoid.

  • Template companies you recommend etc.

  • Best practices with Cobalt

  • Advice on using third party providers....

CONCLUSION:

I really want to start this next project on the right track, and I also want to get down and dirty with a CCK, I guess errors and conflicts are inevitable but I want to do my best to avoid them

I will really appreciate any feedback

  • forum - possible. Just install forum pack. It is one click setup.

  • membership - possible. You will have to purchase Emerald joomla membership extension

  • band pages - possible. As cobalt articles. This article may show all relates articles like albums, artistic, ... Use Relate (parent/child) fields for that.

  • downloadable files - possible. There are 2 fields. One is upload that allow upload and sell through subscription. Another paytodownload that allows upload and sell individually and through subscription.

  • a store. Depends. I need more infor. What are you going to sell and how.

  • a directory - easy!

  • subscriptions. If you mentioned it separately of membership probably you mean subscriptions to newsletters. You can do that. You can automatically subscribe user to newsletter to Acymailing extension on successful membership purchase.

All seems pretty straight foward

Store: Not quite sure at the minute, never done one before so not sure of possibilities and costs but ideally it will be: download albums, buy tickets to events and purchacse stock items like guitar strings, plectrums , guitar leads etc (which will be picked up rather than delivered) so will need to also have a stock control system

Cobalt do not have field for stock items yest.
