A detailed logo, like it is used for Mac applications would be cool ...

Since this is not a corporate logo, but an application logo, i would love to see something detailed.

A concept could be, that workers hammering the Co letters out of a cobalt rock --> Like what we do -- creating something out of Cobalt

Maybe some budget for a professional vector graphic artist might be worth to consider.

Sorry, all this is neither an icon/symbol, nor a logo! ;-)

@Maik Kaune

It does not serve as an icon or logo. An icon should work in all places, i.e. JED, powered by footer, backend etc.

Precisely my point. But we have to differentiate between a corporate logo and an application logo. Do you want to rock the house or just put some "ordinary" icon there? Of course you want to make an impact.

Ok, for a better visualization -- i will take the "Transmit" Logo for an example ( http://panic.com/transmit/ )

Lets put it in the backend:

or a powered by :

or you mentioned JED ... Here is a screen shot from today (with the van, not in perfect resolution)

It is just, that a detailed Logo makes an impression nowadays for a high-end application...

But then again, this is just my opinion, and i even don't know about the exact definition of "logo/icon" (i am not a graphic artist/designer)

@Maik Kaune

I think this time we have a different opinion .. ;-)

While appreciating the simplicity of an Angeldesk logo, i would love to see something extraordinary for Cobalt. My focus would be here the "attraction", getting curious by such (as you described it) "piece of art". And out of my personal behavior, i would rather spent on these applications than on the ones with a crappy presentation site.

Some examples for this "overdetailed" icons:

http://www.awwwards.com/30-beautiful-app-websites.html

Anyway, it is always good to have different opinions, otherwise things would be quite boring if always everyone shares the same opinion.

This can´t be done with Cobalt in an easy way, because it has so many purposes and applicaions.

I disagree. It is just a matter of creativity. Btw, i am not a very "creative" person, but based on the development in this thread, i have something in my head .. Like you said - "construction".

An Icon where maybe a sculptor is hammering the Co out of a "Cobalt block" .. Think of Mount Rushmore ...

And than yes -- it is extraordinary -- but this is what Cobalt is as well ...

Just imagine a site as the PANIC Transit site .. it starts with a big "piece of art" , followed by some simple feature descriptions -- thats it .. i would love it, and it would create some noise in the Joomla world, since you bring the "App" Concept/ marketing into this market ...

But then again, i will better focus on bug searching than on graphic discussions, since i feel more comfortable in this area .. ;-)

@Maik Kaune

Just saw your other comment -- Yes symbolic illustration -- product landing page -- that's exactly what is needed for this product .. and to avoid confusion, just stick with the "symbolic illustration" and move it to the product -- as it is demonstrated thousand times in the "App" Market ..

Ok, let me tell something.

Yes, Maik I can confirm that mind has been changed since we started conversation. But that is because I switched to Mac and mow I have discovered the world of Mac apps. It is whole new world I have never seen before as Windows user. Now i see they completely differentвыенду which @Sackgesicht calls "App Style". And of course under that influence my mind have been transformed into new vision.

I agree with your opinion but now simple icon is not enough as my standards in presentation of the products has raised. I simply will not be satisfied with graphic even 1 level less than DISQUS art. ANd I think only this kind of graphic can express what is Cobalt about. If it is more simple it is like symbol only. But app art is an expression.

Besides Cobalt is an app not a corporation and it's icon will never go off screen. It means that screen only type of art is acceptable.

I like this discussion because it is very conceptual and touches very important point as in marketing as in PR.

  1. Cobalt IS NO app! An app is a standalone program, which may rely on a certain OS. Joomla is not a OS. You can create "applications" with Cobalt IN Joomla. "Application" might be the same wording, but it has a different meaning... and technical background.

Athough, I certainly understand your excitement and enthusiasm!!! about the graphic design style and the illustration character in these days... and on the mac platform! Glad, you took a step out of the (MS) dark side ;-)

  1. Once again, the detailed 3D Illustration (disqus!) will not work in most places and contexts! Thats for sure, believe me.

  2. I agree with you, in this particular form... it is great for a landing/product page. As a banner etc. nothing more, nothing less. If you want a working icon/symbol (whatever you call it). you will need a different presentation and style. At least, it must be stripped down in many aspects.

PS: To make a long story short: Think about the context, where you place the icon/illustration. The normal workflow is: First find an idea, build a concept, create an icon, -> adapt this to a bigger illustration and other visual marketing ideas.

BTW, i really do like the iphone and MacOS app style designs etc.

No doubt, they are "zeitgeisty" as hell. But a certain style is often perceived with a certain purpose. What I mean is: I own and use "apps" since MacOS 6/7 ... and OSX 10.0 used always apps and added also the file extension. So, as a long time mac-user, you always have a different view on the term "app". But the general joomla user does not have the same view and meaning: The first thought is... "hey, cobalt is an app... cool, i will put it on my phone ;-)

What I ment is to post Mac app presentation style in to Cobalt but not to call it app something. It should be obvious that this is Joomla extension but at the same time with this great style.

Generally I agree with you on all ponts. I know that icon is applicable everywhere and art only in one place - landing page. I'll contact you buy skype :)
